Short Report on Training for Technical Trainor ’s
November 12 – 16, 2007
Ateneo Professional Schools, Makati
Center for Leadership and Change Inc (a FranklinCovey Company)
The training for Technical Trainer's is intended for technical staffs that will be doing/designing training courses in the near future. The seminar was organized by HR-Training group and was facilitated by CLCI, FranklinCovey Company. The sessions were held at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati City. All members of the Geochemistry Procedures manual Committee attended with additional attendance from other sectors/department within the Technical Services Sector.
The relevant knowledge gained is the idea that the design of the training should be based on performance based objectives. Traditional training methods focus and address learning needs of people only while performance based training identifies and addresses performance need of people. The performance based objective (PBO) of the training describes what performance can be expected, describe the conditions of performance and sets the standards of performance. In relation to PBO, the next important step is to establish the Skills, Knowledge, and Attitudes part (SKA). SKA identifies which skills can be developed during the training session to improve performance, what cognitive information is needed by the participants in order to meaningfully practice the skill during the training session, and what attitude/motivation/realization will the participants get from the training.
After the SKA, the Process Design (PD) will be established to describe the step by step learning process of the training. It also depicts what the participants are doing during the training. The process design accomplishes to make a skill a part of the person and to make learning active, easy and enjoyable. For every skill identified in SKA, there is one PD. There are plenty of methods that can be used to impart the training it could be a lecturette, small group discussion, demonstration, case study, role play, simulation, etc depending on the appropriate process objectives, knowledge and motivation to be imparted. Each method outlined in PD, there will be a corresponding Method Sheets (MS) to be made in details. The method sheets will be a guide to the lecturer/facilitator of his choice(s) of imparting the training. The MS focus the facilitator on his training and the objective to motivate the participants is realized.
In conclusion, effective and performance training can be achieved by following the simple formula, that is, PBO-> SKA -> PD -> MS.
